IAN McLAREN WALLACE

PSYCHOLOGIST

HUMAN BEHAVIOUR IN COMPLEX HIGH-CONSEQUENCE SITUATIONS

I am endlessly curious about human nature and why people do the things that they do. That’s why I became a psychologist, to understand human behaviour, particularly in complex high-consequence situations.

Rather than staying in the academic ivory towers of psychology, viewing human behaviour as an abstract set of theories, I chose to actually step into those complex high-consequence situations and experience their reality for myself.

HOW PEOPLE FIND MEANING, PURPOSE AND POTENTIAL IN THEIR WORK

As a result of my choices, I have worked professionally as a North Sea oil-rig roughneck, mountain guide, session musician, fashion photographer, commercial pilot, military psychologist, relationship counsellor, child psychologist, celebrity psychologist and technology entrepreneur.

Although these may appear to be quite diverse professional roles (or the result of a short attention span), they are united by my fundamental fascination with human nature and my continuing research into how people find meaning, purpose and potential in thetheir work.

The Human Space

A PSYCHOLOGICAL SPACE FOR UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

A valuable result of all these experiences and explorations has been the Human Space, a psychological framework for understanding human nature and working with it. The Human Space framework helps people to orient themselves in conceptual and experiential space, so they can successfully navigate uncertainty and complexity.

The very nature of being a human is an invitation to step into uncertainty. An invitation to explore the uncertainties and complexities of who you are, who you have been and who you have yet to become.

The Human Space

SPACES AND EDGES

As I work with my clients in these Human Spaces, we often find ourselves exploring the edge of those spaces. The boundary between the inner and the outer world is the edge that we most frequently work with, discovering and understanding the flow of perceptions and perspectives across that boundary.

When exploring the outer world of my clients we can create Imaginal Spaces and when exploring inner worlds, we can create the guided visualisations of Gyral Spaces. much of the work I do in self and situational awareness is about exploring edges, inviting others to discover those edges in Vocal Edges and and journaling my perspectives in Journal Edges.

EXPLORE WHERE OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER MIGHT TAKE US

And as you do so, you may become aware that every other human being is also stepping into uncertainty and complexity as they make the journey to identify their most meaningful work, realise their deeper purpose and open up to their wider potential.

If you would like to step into uncertainty together, whether as an individual or with your organisation, contact me and let’s explore where our journey together might take us.
